Painting a Room
Painting a Room for Beginners by Yvonne Glass
Let's face it - we've all got to start somewhere when it comes to DIY and I was no exception. Recent circumstances meant that I had to start pulling my finger out and do work around the house myself rather than relying on others to do it for me.
I had let the house get into quite a state by the time it hit me that I should really make an effort to start redoing the place. First off I wanted to tackle my dining room and give it a good lick of paint. I hadn't a clue about where to start but looking back I would have loved to have found a list like the one I'll write for you should you ever find yourself in a similar position.
So here goes:
- Always remember - when you're painting a room work from top to bottom and not the other way about. Which takes us to, yes - you've guessed it - the ceilings.
- Ceilings. You are best to start by painting a two-inch strip on the ceiling where it meets the wall. Then, to paint the ceiling itself, start in a corner and work across the short side to maintain a wet edge.
- Walls. Start by painting a two-inch strip along the ceiling, floor, and woodwork with a brush. Using a roller, come as close as possible to the edges to create a clean, even appearance.
- Woodwork. Paint all the trim you can.
Painting is not as easy as it looks - and I should know! It is definitely worth investing in some good rollers and paint that won't end up leaving you needing to apply 12 coats!
Good luck with your DIY!
